Diving with turtles in the Andamans: where to see green and hawksbill turtles
Updated 2026-09-24 · 39 plates in this cluster
Diver Atlas editorial · turtle sites drawn from the marine-life profile on each plate · September 2026
Green and hawksbill turtles are one of the most reliable big-animal sightings in the Andamans, and unlike sharks or dugong they turn up on shallow, beginner-friendly reefs. This page pulls the plates where turtles are part of the site's marine-life profile — not a lucky one-off — so you can plan around them.
Every site is a living encyclopedia plate: depth, difficulty, marine life, hazards. Observe turtles, never chase or touch them — crowding a feeding turtle ends the encounter for everyone.

Named plates
beginner · 5–10 m · boat
Turtle Beach
Eastern fringing reef, Swaraj Dweep
Shallow staghorn gardens (often cited around 80% live cover) with regular green and hawksbill turtles. A gentle, complete site — density over drama — and a priority site for reef-health monitoring.
beginner · 10–15 m · boat
Mac Point
Seagrass and reef edge, Swaraj Dweep
Seagrass meadows and a quiet coral edge. Turtles are regular; dugong are reported here more than anywhere else in the Havelock set. Sensitive-species locations are coarsened on purpose.
advanced · 8–36 m · boat
White House Rock
Offshore reef, Swaraj Dweep
Named for black coral whose white polyps look, from a distance, like a house on the rock. Wall plus slope, turtles, and thick fish. A complete site, not a one-line listing.
intermediate · 6–30 m · boat
South Button
Button Islands Marine National Park
A tiny island of stacked rock columns, overhangs, a western mini-wall and an eastern coral garden. Park water, often gin-clear. South Button day is a flagship Havelock trip; operators typically attest these dives.
The most reliable turtle sites
Turtle Beach earns the name — a 5–10 m staghorn terrace on Havelock's eastern fringing reef, with green and hawksbill turtles among the healthiest shallow coral in the area. It is a beginner Open Water dive, which makes it the easiest turtle encounter in the set.
Mac Point is a shallow seagrass-and-reef edge (10–15 m) where green turtles graze — the same seagrass that draws the Andamans' rare dugong. Keep your distance and stay off the seagrass; this is a place to hover, not kneel.
South Button, inside the Button Islands Marine National Park, adds turtles to a protected reef with a garden for all levels and a wall for Advanced divers.
Turtles on deeper and advanced dives
White House Rock pairs hawksbill turtles with its namesake luminous black-coral polyps; the slope is Open Water friendly, the wall (to 36 m) is Advanced. Broken Ledge and Barracuda City both list sea turtles alongside their bigger draws — a bonus rather than the headline.
Season matters less for turtles than for pelagics — they are resident — but visibility and calm boats still favour the November–April window.

Lighthouse
North-west point, Swaraj Dweep
The workhorse slope under Havelock's lighthouse: 3–23 m, coral gardens, and enough topography for skills and a proper fun dive. This is where many Havelock guests actually get certified.
advanced · 16–30 m · boat
Broken Ledge
Deep reef east of Swaraj Dweep
Looks like a pizza with one slice nudged off. The offset ledge, canyons and outcrops hold turtles, morays and sea kraits. Deep enough to be an advanced site.
intermediate · 15–30 m · boat
Barracuda City
Wall and pinnacle, Swaraj Dweep
A wall dive that earns its name when chevron barracuda stack into a spinning school around the pinnacle. Intermediate site — more current than Aquarium, less commitment than Johnny's.

What kind of turtles live in the Andamans?
Green and hawksbill turtles are the ones you will most often see on the reef. Turtle Beach lists both; several other plates note resident or occasional turtles.
Can beginners dive with turtles in the Andamans?
Yes. Turtle Beach (5–10 m) and Mac Point (10–15 m) are beginner Open Water dives, so a newly certified diver can see turtles without going deep.
